ABOUT HEGRA INC. ARCHITECTS

HEGRA, INC, incorporated in 2017, is the evolution of Ed Goldberg’s forty-year professional practice as an architect. Self-storage facilities are the foundation of HEGRA’s portfolio. New construction, multi-story projects dominate, along with a recent trend in repurposing of existing structures.

OUR APPROACH

We design facilities that are attractive, functional and profitable. Our successful approach incorporates these imperatives:

  • A project must have curb appeal and easy access.

  • Materials and signage must be clean and contemporary.

  • The unit MIX must make maximum use of available space and match the needs of potential customers.

  • Building systems must be cost effective, on budget, on time, structurally sound and code compliant.

H. EDWARD GOLDBERG, AIA, NCARB

“Ed” graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Industrial design from the Philadelphia College of Art in 1968 and received his Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Maryland in 1975. After being licensed, he opened a design/build firm, GOLDBERG/TYDINGS, Inc.

Baltimore’s Inner Harbor was enjoying a renaissance and the city was awarding historic nineteenth century townhouses in the surrounding areas to homeowners and developers. Dilapidated and in need of complete rehabilitation, interiors were gutted, and some facades needed to be rebuilt. GOLDBERG/TYDINGS, purchased forty 1890’s townhouses from the city. They became experts in rehabilitation, rebuilding in the Barre Circle and Ridgely’s Close historic neighborhoods. Other projects Goldberg/Tydings Inc. renovated were a 120-unit multi-family condominium complex, several restaurants, a four-story office/retail complex, and a five story Victorian bed and breakfast. Mr. Tydings has since passed away.

Ed has been a construction project manager for several major national developers. He oversaw the building of a new engineering center on the campus of Johns’ Hopkins University, a Prison in Washington DC, and in 1988, for Chesapeake Construction Co., he project-managed his first self-storage warehouse– EZ-STORE’s first multi-story facility.

Ed served as head of CAD and Multi-Media at Carroll Community College, and head of the Industrial Design Department at Towson University. He has written fourteen books on architectural software.

While teaching, trading as HEGRA Architects, he designed facilities for Storage USA. HEGRA INC. was incorporated in 2017. The company focuses on self-storage, light commercial, restaurants, and conversions.

As an architect with extensive construction experience, Ed understands the needs of contractors. He knows materials; His designs are cost effective and builder friendly. He has keen analytical and critical thinking skills, especially useful when repurposing existing structures. Ed’s CAD skills maximize his productivity, allowing him to operate a one-man office, collaborating with associates when needed. His team includes structural and MEP engineers with whom he has worked for years.
